Become a Hero Like Bellerophon or Achilles in Grepolis

Amass an army feared by all and bring your vision of ancient Greece come to life in InnoGames' Grepolis. This free-to-play browser title allows you to recruit armies on both land and water, buy fearsome mythical units and draw upon the power of the Greek gods to expand your territory. If you're a lover, not a fighter, you can also choose to forge alliances with other players to defend against those attacking your city. In this strategy MMO, you decide who to be. Will you charge into battle in the name of wise goddess Athena? or, perhaps you prefer to serve the mighty god Zeus instead? Make your choice and take up arms for the glory of your city.

Wealth is Power

As they say, from small beginnings come great things. That being said, every sprawling city in Grepolis started off as a humble Polis. Your holdings may not be impressive from the get go but, as you progress through the game, you are given the chance to expand your territory either by patiently building structures or by taking lands from other players. In order to do either, you will need resources as these serve as the basis for your growing city. There are three basic resources (Silver, Wood and Stone) as well as three Special Resources (Population, Research Points and Divine Favor).

From building construction to casting spells, everything you do in Grepolis will depend on these resources. Once you have built the building responsible for producing them, you will start receiving them at a rate which depends on the type of island you inhabit. The accumulation of these resources will not stop even if you are not online, which means you'll have to make room for them if you do not want them to go to waste. Resources are also a key element to the game's strategy mechanics as you may also boost your stash by farming AI villages and by attacking neighboring islands. However, looting too often leaves you vulnerable to revolts.

Playing Well With Others

As Grepolis is InnoGames' founding title, the in-game community is already established with a player base of about six million. New Worlds also come out whenever existing ones become full and are crowded. On the other hand, if the number of active players dip below 300, it will only stay for a month before it is closed, giving players the chance to begin a game on a new World. Joining an older World would mean that you will have to deal with others who have progressed much further in the game. This is deemed more difficult as you will need to defend your budding city from those who already have powerful units while juggling resource gathering. In cases like these, prioritizing a good line of defense is your best bet while you are still under Beginner's Protection. Requesting alliances is also a good idea as neighboring cities will want you to survive as much as possible in order to help you expand your territory.

The freemium system in Grepolis is fair enough that it allows you to enjoy the full experience without having to pay anything. Now, if you are open to the idea of allocating some funds to the game, you will be able to both save time when building structures, doing research and amassing resources. Grepolis' premium content also allows you to boost the strength of your units -- a must for competitive play.

Pretty Enough for Both Browsers and Mobile Devices

While the graphics in Grepolis aren't as impressive as those found in paid AAA titles, they are still a feast for the eyes. The interface is clean, reminiscent of the UI found in the Baldur's Gate series. The images may be static but this makes the miniscule structures easier to view and manage in the long run. Animations are few and far between as reports are text-based. The color scheme is dominantly yellow, which fits the theme of the game. Basically, the graphics are practical. They run smoothly in both browsers and mobile devices and, though mostly static, they're detailed enough to keep you immersed in the game.

With the game's exciting events and long-standing gaming community, Grepolis is a must-play for strategy and history buffs alike. It features unique mechanics such as multi-city management and cross platform play. Its freemium content is fair so long as you're not the type to mind a few losses. If you are, then be prepared to spend a significant amount of money to hasten things up. Think you have what it takes to become a Hero? Play Grepolis and see if you can win the favor of your chosen god.
